FAQs

Professional peer support is a structured form of assistance provided by trained individuals with lived experiences in specific areas such as mental health, addiction recovery, or incarceration.

-
Peer support is guided by the needs of each individual so no two experiences look the same. However, in general, sessions may include things like goal setting, resource sharing, and collaborative problem-solving. It’s also a space to be heard and feel supported so sometimes it’s simply an opportunity for participants to be able to unpack what’s going on in their lives with someone willing to really listen and not try to “fix” things or tell them what they “should” do.
-
We can see why you might think that, but no not really. Peer support is non-clinical so there is no diagnostic process, treatment plan, or expected outcome. If you want to talk about your past, you’re more than welcome to but no one is going to make you talk about anything you don’t want to.
Our job is to help you figure out what YOU need to be okay right NOW because YOU are the expert on what’s best for YOU.
-
Yep! We will not share what you tell us with anyone without your permission and we are NOT mandated reporters. However, if you share with us a serious intention to cause harm to another individual we will need to work with you to keep everyone safe, which may include notifying law enforcement. If that is the case, however, you will always be included in the process (unless the peer workers themselves are in fear for their safety) - no surprises.
The only information we report back is the dates you attended sessions, any missed meetings, discharge/program completion, and a general overview of the session. For example,“We met at our office and discussed coping skills, recovery, and their upcoming court date.”
-
Each participant will be given 3 sessions through this program. Depending on the number of referrals and available funds, additional sessions could be authorized. If this is warranted, the peer worker will reach out to the referring party for authorization.
-
Many of our sessions will happen in our office in Banbury Place (it’s a pretty cool space… promise) but could take place in community spaces like the library when it makes sense for the participant’s goals. We will work with you to determine a session time that works for your schedule and your peer worker's availability.
-
No, we do not but we are on the bus route here in Eau Claire. If the bus or other forms of transportation are not available to you, we’re happy to meet you at a public location closer to home.
-
Peer support should always be voluntary. If at any time you want to end services early or withdraw from the program, At The Roots LLC honors and supports your right to do so.
However, you will want to discuss this decision with the person who referred you before disengaging to make sure you understand how it fits into your specific situation.
-
Because funding for this program is limited, we do want people to be actively engaged in the program but we understand that life happens.
Whenever possible, we ask that participants provide notice 24 hours in advance of any cancelations. If there are 3 or more cancelations with less than 24 hours’ notice, more than one no-call/no-show, or a participant does not meet with their peer support worker for a period of 3 weeks or longer, they will likely be discharged from the program.
