Youth Connection Specialist

The Youth Connection Specialist with At The Roots LLC is a direct support position working with youth in our service area. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys when no two days are the same and who has a deep passion for helping youth between the ages of 10-19 to build emotional, social, and daily living skills that will help them be successful in school, the community, and in the future. This position requires an open mind, resiliency, enthusiasm, and a great sense of humor.

The ideal candidate will be a deeply curious and FUN individual who feels just as comfortable in a school setting as they do on a basketball court. They’re naturally able to balance compassionate care for others while maintaining healthy boundaries and it’s impossible to feel left out when this person is around – no matter who you are. There’s probably nothing they love more than hearing someone’s story and experiencing new things.

Our Youth Connection Specialist will be paid between $18-$22 an hour depending on experience. This position requires a flexible schedule with typical hours being between 12pm-8pm Monday through Friday. However, there may be times when a meeting or training session requires an earlier start time. This position is expected to work between 15-20 hours per week but could grow into more hours for the right candidate.  

General Duties:

  • Assist peers in identifying and addressing skill learning opportunities and wellness goals, guiding them through their development.

  • Facilitate individual and small group programming, activities, and events.

  • Empower participants to advocate for themselves.

  • Share personal experiences when beneficial to peers.

  • Complete all required documentation in compliance with state, company, and quality assurance standards.

  • Attend required meetings and training sessions.

  • Maintain eligibility to provide services by meeting training, continuing education, background checks, and documentation requirements.

  • Communicate regularly with participants, management, contract partners, and other providers as needed.

  • Maintain self-care and personal recovery.

  • Pursue relevant learning and training opportunities.

  • Meet deadlines as defined by contracts and organizational requirements.

  • Document service delivery as required by agency, state, or federal guidelines.

  • Adapt to changing policies, requirements, and business needs.

  • Adhere to strict privacy and confidentiality rules at all times.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES

  • Has lived experience with trauma recovery, mental health challenges, youth criminal justice systems, and/or substance use.

  • Experience or training in youth mentorship, coaching, education, or leadership

  • Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds and an ongoing desire to develop cultural awareness.

  • Comfortable expressing emotions and sitting with the emotions of others

  • A deep passion for and desire to learn more about mental health challenges, substance use, and support concepts

  • Good interpersonal communication skills with an ability to adapt to the audience and situation

  • Respectful, professional, and non-judgmental attitude

  • Strong ability to establish and maintain healthy boundaries

  • Working knowledge of computers and smartphones

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word/Excel and Google Docs/Sheets

  • Functional understanding of email and appropriate written communication etiquette

  • Willingness to drive to all counties in which At The Roots LLC is a contracted provider to provide services as assigned

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

This position REQUIRES the completion of a degree, certification, related education, or extensive experience in two or more of the following areas:  

  • Peer Support/Peer Mentoring

  • Child Development/Education

  • Youth Sports Coaching

  • Curious Communities Training

  • WI Certified Peer Specialist

  • Wellness Recovery Action Plan

  • Intentional Peer Support

  • Emotional CPR

  • Other relevant formal education related to youth

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be willing to submit to and able to pass a caregiver background check as required by the State of WI and be cleared in all contracted counties/schools/organizations to provide services.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license, and car insurance and be able to pass a motor vehicle record check

  • Must be willing and able to provide letters of recommendation and proof of any/all certifications.
