Seamus Schoen

Peer Mentor (He/Him/His)

SPECIAL INTERESTS: Foster Care | Adoption | Mental Health | Developmental Disabilities | Parenting Support

Seamus is an individual who joins us with an interesting blend of abilities benefitting many. Born in Idaho and raised in his teenage years in Wisconsin, Seamus is familiar with childhood and adolescent disruption. He is also familiar with loss and grief, after losing his own father at the age of ten. This loss inspired him to make the most of being a parent to his own family of six. After meeting his wife and her two daughters, they brought their own daughter Finnley into the mix. However, they decided their hearts and home still had room for more. Fostering and later adopting three children. Seamus is uniquely insightful in the chaotic world of blended families, fostercare, and adoption. As well as all the institutions and relationships that come with those paradigms.

His training in Applied Behavior Analysis and working with special needs, and Autism Spectrum clientele has helped him develop a rewarding parenting style. Oftentimes he has had friends and family reach out for advice on how to handle a struggling child or a difficult situation. This experience has let him understand not just the techniques of parenting but the struggles that comes with it. He understands that while everyone wants to be the best parent for their children, that some days it comes easier than others. Seamus also has a familiarity to depression as well as emotional empathy that comes from that struggle. With this understanding comes an attitude of understanding. He knows that no one enjoys these feelings, but that depression doesn’t give that choice.

In order to find the balance between personal self-care and the care of your family, Seamus believes that it is important to rely on your support, develop yourself, and find hobbies you can complete both individually and with the family.

When he finds the time Seamus often enjoys video games, tabletop gaming, and miniature painting. When spending time with the family, he enjoys time at the park watching the kids play, and teaching his children the intricacies of Kubb and Chess.

Seamus enjoys working with families to help build a secure bond between family members. As well as working with children who have had a rough start, or just need a little guidance at the moment.
