PROVIDER SPOTLIGHT: Karsten Ness

Karsten has been a Peer Mentor with At The Roots for a short time, but his laid-back energy and ability to roll with the punches immediately made him a natural fit. He’s approachable, friendly, and easy to work with. Read on to find out more about Karsten in his own words:

Where are you from/where did you grow up?

I grew up in Strum, Wisconsin. It’s a rural town about 30 minutes south of Eau Claire.

When/why did you get into peer support?

I got into peer support about six months ago, so I'm still new to it. I chose it because I wanted a job that I felt I was knowledgeable in, made a positive impact in the community and that I would enjoy. Peer support checked all the boxes.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Having social interactions with people who would normally struggle to go out and meet with people. Knowing you’re not alone when you’re going through a tough time can make a big difference.

Where would you like to see peer support go in the future?

I’d like to see it become more mainstream. It would be amazing if all health insurance would cover peer support. I think everyone should have access to a resource like this.

Any hobbies or interests outside of work?

I like to hike trails and play fetch with my dog, Bucky. I also like to play board and video games with friends and family.

What is your favorite book/movie/tv show?

Harry Potter. I grew up reading the books in school and watched all the movies when they came out in theaters.

Can you share any fun facts about yourself or something your colleagues may not know about you?

I was in my senior high-school musical production of “Annie.” I pushed through my social anxiety and had a ton of fun!

💖We’re so happy to have you on the team, Karsten!💖
