According to the good ol’ Merrium Webster, compassion fatigue is defined as:
medical : the physical and mental exhaustion and emotional withdrawal experienced by those who care for sick or traumatized people over an extended period of time. Unlike burnout, which is caused by everyday work stresses (dealing with insurance companies, making treatment choices), compassion fatigue results from taking on the emotional burden of a patient's agony.—Tim Jarvis
apathy or indifference toward the suffering of others as the result of overexposure to tragic news stories and images and the subsequent appeals for assistance
And after the last few years especially, many people in helping professions are feeling overwhelmed and exhausted by trying to make the world a better place.
Our Compassion Fatigue Support Circle is meant to be a place where people in helping professions can get together and share the struggles they may be experiencing while also knowing they’re not alone. Participants will have the opportunity to share, listen, and offer support to one another while also holding space for the immense responsibility we are honored to carry.
Participants do NOT need to identify as already experiencing compassion fatigue to participate as we’d love for this group to be a protective factor that helps prevent that fatigue from ever setting in if possible. We do ask that participants be providing emotional support to others in either a volunteer or professional capacity to participate.
This group is offered free of charge by At The Roots LLC but registration is required. Registration ends 24 hours before the event begins.
IN PERSON ONLY. NO VIRTUAL OPTION.
