Provider Spotlight: Astrid Ela
Astrid Ela is one of our Connection Specialists, a fitting title for her as she makes connections and finds community wherever she goes. A free spirit through and through, her tendency to pop up in unexpected places has made us decide she has the ability to teleport. One minute she’s exploring Duluth, and the next, she’s back in the office providing support and leading groups. Astrid is relatively new in an official capacity, but At The Roots has partnered with her in the past on community events, making her a natural fit for our organization. Here’s some more about Astrid in her own words:
Where are you from/where did you grow up?
I’m from the town of Rice Lake, Wisconsin. I grew up there with my three older sisters and a younger brother.
When/why did you get into peer support?
My journey into peer support started from a heartfelt desire to lift others and help them feel empowered. I’ve always believed in the transformative power of community, empathy, and shared experiences.
Where would you like to see peer support go in the future?
I envision a future where peer support is seamlessly integrated into various community spaces, making it more accessible to everyone who needs it, creating a stronger sense of belonging and understanding.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
The connections I build with people are incredibly fulfilling. The sense of community formed is invaluable. Seeing tangible growth and positive changes in others' lives is a rewarding experience. Whether it's a small "aha" moment or a profound transformation, witnessing it firsthand is energizing and inspiring.
What are some of the challenges in your job?
I find it challenging that peer support isn’t as readily available to everyone who seeks it. There's so much potential for impact, and I wish more people had access to it.
Any hobbies or interests outside of work?
Outside of work, I'm passionate about belly dancing, immersing myself in nature, and writing poetry. I find joy in expressing myself creatively. I am also an Astrologer and a published Author.
What is your favorite movie/book/TV show?
As a poet and author, I gravitate towards books that inspire and provoke deep thought, offering rich insight into the human experience. While I don't have a single favorite, I treasure works that evoke emotion and reflection.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever gotten?
The best advice I’ve received came from my grandpa, a farmer who lived to the ripe old age of 98. As he was passing away, he told me that the most important thing in life is love. This resonates deeply with me, as I strive to approach all things from a place of love. Additionally, he taught me the value of truly listening to others advice that I hold dear in my life and work.
