SMART RECOVERY GROUPS

@ At The Roots LLC

Recovery is not one-size-fits-all.

And support shouldn’t be either.

SMART Recovery is a science-informed approach to recovery that focuses on practical tools, self-awareness, and building a life beyond addictive behaviors. SMART stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training, and the model is designed to help people create meaningful, lasting change through skill-building, reflection, and support.

The approach is grounded in evidence-based practices, including tools drawn from cognitive and motivational psychology. Meetings are centered around conversation, practical application, and mutual support - not shame, judgment, or pressure to follow a single path to recovery.

If you’re looking for something that feels more flexible, skill-based, or aligned with your personal beliefs and experiences, we can’t wait to meet you!

FAQs

  • SMART Recovery focuses on helping individuals better understand their behaviors, strengthen motivation, manage urges, and develop healthier ways of thinking and coping. It does not require participants to identify with labels like “addict” or “alcoholic,” and it does not view people as powerless over their circumstances.

  • Of course! SMART Recovery, and At The Roots LLC, recognizes that medication-assisted treatment can be an important and life-saving part of recovery for many people.

Meetings are open to individuals using medications such as Suboxone, methadone, naltrexone, etc.

Our focus is not on deciding what recovery or wellness should look like for someone else. The focus is on supporting people as they work toward the kind of life, stability, and change that feels meaningful and sustainable to them.

  • No. SMART Recovery is not a religious program and does not require any specific spiritual beliefs or practices to participate. The approach is grounded in evidence-based tools and practical skill-building rather than a particular faith tradition.

That said, people of all belief systems (including religious, spiritual, agnostic, and atheist individuals) are welcome. SMART Recovery does not ask participants to leave their personal beliefs at the door. The goal is simply to create a respectful space where people can focus on growth, change, and support in a way that feels authentic to them.

  • Many people come to SMART Recovery because they’re questioning their relationship with substances or behaviors, feeling stuck in certain patterns, or simply exploring whether change might be helpful.

SMART Recovery is designed to support people in different stages of change. The focus is not on forcing someone into a specific definition of recovery, but on helping people build awareness, identify goals that matter to them, and develop practical tools to move them towards those goals.
