Where are you from/where did you grow up?
I grew up in Elk Mound, Wisconsin, and lived there for 18 years until I graduated from high school. After that, I spent two years in La Crosse before returning to the Eau Claire area. I came back because I'm familiar with the community and appreciate the slower pace of life here.
When/why did you get into peer support?
I began doing peer support about a year and a half ago, shortly after moving back from La Crosse to Eau Claire. Some people I know suggested that it might be a good fit for me, and when I looked into it more, I agreed. Through my own life experiences I have learned many skills from my own mistakes and from other people that have supported me along the way. Peer support seemed like a great opportunity to do something meaningful and fun, and so far, it’s been both fun and incredibly rewarding.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
What I enjoy most about my job is the opportunity to connect with others. It is very meaningful to me being able to relate to someone and offer support just by listening. Even small conversations can have a big impact. I also enjoy that this work has helped me grow personally. I've become more patient, more connected with those around me, and better at seeing challenges from different perspectives.
What are some of the challenges in your job?
One challenge in this job is finding new and relevant activities to do with someone when meeting regularly, especially in rural areas where there are fewer community resources or events.
Any hobbies or interests outside of work?
Some of my hobbies include frisbee golfing, geocaching, fishing, and basketball. I really enjoy being outside. Being in nature helps me clear my head and reduce my anxiety. No matter what activity I'm doing I always feel more like myself when I'm outside.
What is your favorite movie/book/TV show?
It's hard for me to choose a favorite movie, but The Pursuit of Happyness is definitely one of them. I rewatch it every few years, and it always hits me in the feels. A TV show that I will always want to watch is The Office. I quote iconic lines all the time, and no matter how many times I watch it, it always makes me laugh.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever gotten?
A very meaningful piece of advice to me is “Time heals all wounds.” While I don’t believe time alone can fix everything, it has often given me the space and perspective I needed to begin healing. This reminder has helped me through many difficult times by showing me that even when things don’t feel okay right now, they won’t always feel this way.
