Join us for a six-session book club as we read The Great Pretender: The Undercover Mission That Changed Our Understanding of Madness by Susannah Cahalan.
This gripping investigation into a landmark psychiatric study raises big questions about diagnosis, the nature of mental illness, and what happens when science shapes lives.
This group is for anyone in the community - whether you’ve lived through the system, work alongside it, or are simply trying to understand it - who wants to explore the complicated history behind how we define, diagnose, and treat madness.
Together, we’ll ask where those ideas came from, who got to shape them, and what it might look like to imagine something better.
How It Works:
We'll meet every other week for six sessions.
The first session will be in person - you’ll get your FREE copy of the book (may be gently used), meet the group, and ease into the themes.
After that, we’ll decide together: Registration includes a short poll to vote on continuing online, in person, or alternating formats.
You'll read chapters between sessions, and discussions will be gently guided to support deep, honest, and open conversation.
Content Disclaimer:
This book dives into difficult themes, including psychiatric mistreatment and systemic failures. For that reason, this group is open to adults only. Some content may be triggering depending on your experiences.
This is a space for critical thinking, mutual respect, and community connection.
Let’s rethink what we think we know, together.
