The Very Mad Book Club: Exploring Mental Health, History, and Change

  • At The Roots LLC 800 Wisconsin Street BLDG D02 SUITE 301 Eau Claire United States (map)

Join us for a four-session book club as we dive into Mad in America: Bad Science, Bad Medicine, and the Enduring Mistreatment of the Mentally Ill by Robert Whitaker. This group is for anyone in the community who wants to explore the history of mental health treatment, challenge mainstream narratives, and reconsider what care should look like today.

📖 How It Works:

  • Everyone who joins will receive a copy of the book (potentially gently used) to keep.

  • We’ll meet every other week in-person for four sessions.

  • Participants will read sections of the book on their own between sessions

  • Discussions will be gently guided to help foster deep, honest, and open discussions regarding the book’s themes and their relevance today.

⚠️ Content Disclaimer ⚠️
The book and discussions will address difficult topics, including historical and systemic mistreatment in the mental health field. For this reason, this group is open to adults only. Keep in mind that for some, the content of the book and corresponding discussion may be triggering.

This is a space for open-minded exploration, critical thinking, and community connection. Whether you have lived experience, work in the field, or are simply curious, we’d love for you to join us!

Let’s rethink what we think we know—together.
